What is a Prophet?

Deuteronomy 18:18 says’ I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.

Of all the 9 nine Gifts of the Holy Spirit this one Prophecy is so missed used, in so many ways. Prophecy is a direct word from God to His people, often times God will speak to a group of people through Prophecy or He will speak to an individual concerning a matter. People tend to think that Prophecy is going to be long message or short message please don’t get so caught up in the length of a message.

Why do we run to Prophets thinking that they are going to give us a word to bring you some type of prosperity? When I read the bible and see the Prophets God raised up they came with messages of doom, correction and they spoke about God’s wrath if they won’t listen. But in today’s world everyone wants a prophet to speak a word to them as if it’s going to change their lives into something better. Like what they will receive how rich or how wealthy they are going to be. That is not the office of a prophet…Yes they come with harsh messages and that is to change us to do right, but if you think a prophet is going to be your Jeannie in a bottle you got it all wrong and you don’t really understand the office of a prophet.

Paul tells us to “desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy and like I said in the beginning of these teaches we can stir the gifts within us.

How many times have God spoken to you about a matter and someone will come along you and speak that exact words God already told you? Of course you have had this happen that is because often times when God sees that we are not paying attention or listening to His voice He sends His messengers to confirm what God has already spoken.

All prophecy must be in line with the word of God if it’s not then that prophecy that came to you was not from God, remember that, also remember that when prophecy is given from God, He or she will always say Jesus name in the prophecy, and if that prophecy which was spoken does not come true then that person never heard from God, I know many of you are going to debate this and say maybe they got their singles crossed, no there is no such thing. When God sends His word out it always accomplish what it was sent to do, it never comes back void…

Also with prophecy if someone is prophesying to you this is where the spirit of discernment comes into play, if you have discernment and it’s sharp you can discern which spirits are talking to you.

To know more about this gift please do a study by getting your concordance out and look the word up because there is so much about this gift that I can’t do in one devotion.

Warning: I am very Leary of those who run after people who have the five fold calling upon their lives because most people only do it to see if they can get it attached to them as if it can be transferred from one person to another. If you are doing this you must be careful other wise you are placing yourself in idolatry worshiping the person and not reverence the gift God had given them.

  1. One aspect of the ministry of the prophet that is missing among all the noise we are hearing today is that the prophet is called to warn the people of God, call them to holiness and prepare them for the return of the Lord. Unfortunately all I am hearing is how to be anointed, and get rich.

    Thanks for sounding the alarm!

    • Thank you Walter and yes too much of other things going on instead of what a prophet is to do..when I read the bible no one liked when a prophet came speaking because it was very rare that you was going to hear a warm feeling message…today’s people want those warm feelings and I thank God He does not always give us those things we want to hear HE tells us the truth in spite of ourselves.

  2. Thanks so much dear Desiray, for encouraging us to seek to prophesy according to His word and desire for us and to also receive prophecy, that is from God, with discernment. . God bless you and yours this weekend!

  3. God bless you Desiray, I love the topic. I’ve been doing a study for false and true prophets that last week. Seems to be an ever abounding list of them online. Well maybe thats due to an ever growing webpresence. Not sure anyway the subject is big!
    Paul.
